Wonder what we get up to in sessions?
We normally start with some horse related jobs. Such as poo picking, mucking out, making haynets, making feeds etc
This may sound like I’m just getting them to do all the jobs for me. Until you watch the young people try to push a wheelbarrow for the first time, try to open a gate or handle a broom. You watch them 6 weeks later the difference is incredible. They are also learning functional skills without acknowledgment.
We then lead the horses in from the fields, have time for a quick biscuit and drink in the pony cabin and then groom the horses before we start our learning.
The sessions are very child lead. Some days we do lots of ‘learning’ have a topic, actively carryout tasks and other days we enjoy the horses company and do pretty plaits in their manes and tails. If the horses need certain care, that is the priority of the session. The young people get involved with every aspect of the horses care. They even get involved with the vet, farrier, dentist and any treatment the horses may need by a professional.
All sessions are tailored to suit the needs of the young people and the horses.
